COURSES > WHAT COURSE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Confident Captain/Ocean Pros offers a wide variety of courses ranging from many different USCG certified courses as well as RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Sail Certification. The best way to choose a class is to first determine a goal; decide if you are looking to use your certification professionally or not, and then consider if you would benefit most from basic safety training, a Captains/Yachtmaster course, or both! If you are interested in getting your Captain/Yachtmaster license you need to initially figure out how much sea time you have and the tonnage of the boats on which you have it. If you decide that you would like to use your license professionally, you should consider what types of boats you would like to work on; specifically you will need to decide if you want a license that will allow you to captain United States or foreign flagged vessel.

For those interested in working on US flagged vessels, the US Coast Guard courses will meet your needs. Please click on the OUPV (Six-Pak), Master 100GT, and Able Seaman tabs below. If you decide that you are interested in Basic Safety training and want to learn skills such as basic firefighting and personal survival techniques, please click on STCW-95 tab below. For those interested in being able to captain foreign flagged boat up to 200GT, please read more about the Yachtmaster Requirements below. Please note that although upon successful completion of these courses the student will graduate with a professional certification, recreational boaters who are looking to advance their skills are welcome at Confident Captain/Ocean Pros.

OUPV (Six-Pak) Course Information and Requirements
The US Coast Guard Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) license allows the holder to act as an operator of any uninspected vessel up to 100 Gross Tons. These vessels are limited to carrying six passengers for hire which is why this license is often referred to as the "Six-pak". An example of an uninspected vessel could be a small charter boat or a small assistance towing vessel such as those operated by Safe/Sea.

·         Prerequisite Sea Time Experience: The OUPV/Six-Pak candidate must have a significant amount of sea time experience prior to taking the course. The candidate must have at least 360 days of sea time before he or she is eligible to take a USCG Captain's Course. The US Coast Guard defines one day as 4 hours underway. There are exceptions for professional mariners working several shifts in one day and those who live aboard. For more information about documenting your sea time please click here.
